Today, the Koelner Akademie under the direction of Michael Alexander Willens is presenting another world premiere recording. Together with soloist Michael Borgstede, they have recorded works by Johann Heinrich Rolle, the “nation's favourite composer” from 1781.
Johann Heinrich Rolle (1716-1785) was one of the most popular composers of his time, whose works were tremedously widely spread.
Already active as an organist at St. Peter's Church in Magdeburg at a young age, he later played as a violinist and violist in the court chapel of Frederick II. He had a lasting influence on musical life in Magdeburg when he worked for a long period as cantor at the main church of St. Johannis. Among his contemporaries, Rolle was regarded as the “nation's favorite composer” - a title that attests to his popularity and esteem.
On their latest CD, recorded for the cpo label, the Early Music ensemble presents Rolle's three only remaining Sinfonias and two harpsichord concerti.
